Wollstonecraft is a neighbourhood in the North Sydney Council area, located on the waterfront of Sydney Harbor four kilometres north of the Sydney central business district.
In recognition of Edward Wollstonecraft, the first immigrant in the area who was awarded a land grant of 500 acres in 1821, the community was given the name Wollstonecraft. Wollstonecraft fled England in search of financial success for himself and his sister Elizabeth, and to escape the spotlight cast on his family by Mary Wollstonecraft, his aunt and
creator of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman.
Edward Wollstonecraft’s business partner Alexander Berry was a famous local figure[4] and the inspiration for the name of a renowned harbour-side locale in Wollstonecraft: Berry Island.
It was once a part of the Eora nation’s region that the Cammeraygal people called home before European colonists arrived.
The 2016 Census revealed a total of 8,323 people living in Wollstonecraft. There were 55.7% of the population born in Australia. China, New Zealand, Hong Kong, and India were the next most common places of origin, after England. As much as 69.3 percent of the population only spoke English at home. Over 4% of the population spoke Mandarin at home, whereas 3.9% spoke Cantonese, 1.7% spoke Spanish, and 1.5% spoke Japanese. The largest religious group in the survey was the Nones (39.2%), followed by the Catholics (21.3%) and the Anglicans (11.1%).
