Whalan is a neighbourhood in the city of Sydney, which is located in the state of New South Wales in Australia. Within the jurisdiction of the City of Blacktown, the suburb of Whalan can be found approximately 44 kilometres to the west of the Central Business District of Sydney. Whalan is a part of the Greater Western Sydney region.
James Whalan, who in 1831 received 1.2 square kilometres (300 acres) of land at Mount Druitt from Governor Ralph Darling, is honoured with the naming of the surrounding community. Whalan. His father was Sergeant Charles Whalan, who commanded the Light Horse Guard and worked as the orderly sergeant for Governor Lachlan Macquarie. His grandfather was also a member of the Light Horse Guard. James Whalan discovered the Grand Arch rock formation when he was looking for the bushranger McKeown in the region close to Jenolan Caves and the Blue Mountains. Whalan was on an exploration mission in that area.

The sizeable reserve that Whalan possesses is comprised of both football and soccer grounds with four of each. In addition to this, it features a large number of parks as well as a sizeable go-kart track that is accessible on Saturdays. In addition to it, the verdant neighbourhood is home to a variety of smaller parks and reserves, one of which being RAAF Park, which is located on the neighborhood’s eastern border. This park was established as a memorial to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) camp that occupied this site during World War 2. An airfield that was adjacent to the main road that led to Whalan Reserve still had a runway that was operational. This runway, along with sections of Luxford Road and Kuringai Avenue, was a component of the old Mt. Druitt racecourse until the region was developed by the New South Wales Housing Commission in the middle of the 1960s.

Whalan is home to not one, not two, but three different public schools: Whalan Public, Madang Public, and Halinda Special Needs School. Whalan High School was closed down not long after the debacle involving the Daily Telegraph newspaper and Mt. Druitt High School HSC students who were wrongly labelled as “failures” (for which the newspaper apologised and settled out of court a class action brought by students and teachers). Several of the local high schools were consolidated into Chifley College, which now has campuses in the neighbouring communities of Dharruk, Shalvey, North St. Marys, and Bidwill. These schools had previously been closed down and reorganised. At the moment, both Halinda and the headquarters of the PCYC make use of the grounds and the buildings.
