Waverton is a suburb located on Sydney’s lower North Shore in the Australian state of New South Wales. Waverton is located four kilometres north of Sydney’s central business district and falls within North Sydney Council’s jurisdiction.
In 1929, Waverton was named after the Waverton Estate of early resident Robert Old. The land was formerly owned by William Carr, who named it after a family-related English village.
The North Shore railway line was extended from St. Leonards to Milsons Point in 1893. This station was known as Bay Road for nearly four decades, after the roadway that crosses the train tracks. In 1929, the local progress association proposed a name change, and Waverton was selected.
Indigenous Australians inhabited the area until 1916. They left behind several evidence of their presence. Near the heritage-listed Coal Loader is a gigantic whale-shaped rock sculpture, as well as waterholes and grinding grooves at Balls Head Reserve and engravings and grinding grooves in Waverton Park.
The North Shore, Northern & Western Line of Sydney Trains stops at Waverton Station. HMAS Waterhen is a naval installation that can be found on Balls Head Road.
Waverton has a village-like collection of shops surrounding the train station, including an IGA supermarket, bottle shop, butcher, dry cleaners, pharmacy, and a number of restaurants and cafés, including the Third Rail Cafe, Botanica Cafe, Bay Tandoori, and Tasty Thai. After a three-year absence, the “Grumpy Baker” returned to Waverton in late 2018.
Balls Head Reserve, the peninsula of bushland, is a popular picnic location, particularly when there are fireworks in the harbour. Its network of one-way roads is frequently utilised by hikers and joggers.
Waverton Park, which is situated on the shores of Berrys Bay and provides views of Sydney Harbour, is yet another recreation centre.
