The neighbourhood was originally called Riverview, but it was renamed Wallace in honour of a local cattle rancher named Robert Wallace. Wallace rented 2,000 acres (8.1 km2) of land from Sir Charles Nicholson 1st Bt. of Luddenham and used it to graze cattle. Beginning in November 1885, his home, located behind what is now the Wallacia Store and Newsagents, served as the area’s de facto post office. Wallace School was established in 1897 after the construction of a new school. Because the name Wallace was already in use elsewhere in New South Wales, when it became official in November 1905, the General Post Office renamed the town Boondah. Locals were opposed, and instead proposed keeping the name Wallacia in honour of Wallace. On June 1, 1906, this name was first used officially. On March 25, 1908, John and Ethel Mary (née Murphy) Fowler and their family moved from Mulgoa, where Elizabeth Fowler née Holt held the Post Office Licence. On April 1, 2008, the Fowler family celebrated 100 years of ownership of the Wallacia Post Office, which began on that date in 1908 when John Fowler accepted the licence [citation needed].
The Wallace Post Office opened on January 16, 1891, and was later renamed Boondah and then Wallacia.
John Blaxland built the first wooden weir at “Grove Farm,” where a sandstone flour mill and adjacent brewery now stand. When rust infected the English soft wheat and rendered the flour mill at Grove Farm unusable, George Edward Cox, a teetotaler who lived in Winbourne (now Christian Brothers Retreat Mt Zion) on the other side of the Nepean River in Mulgoa, purchased it. After William “Billy” Baines purchased Grove Farm, the name “Baines Hill” can be seen on Silverdale Road beyond the Blue Mountains’ monoslope foothills. Billy Baines erected a brass plaque on a sandstone block near the barn at Grove Farm to commemorate the Nepean River’s highest recorded flood in 1873. The block is located next to the water mark, which is still visible on a wood trunk pillar.
