Waitara is a suburb of Upper North Shore Sydney in the state of New South Wales, Australia. It is situated 19 kilometres to the north-west of the Central Business District of Sydney and falls under the jurisdiction of the Hornsby Shire local government area.

Waitara is a central location for businesses relating to automobiles, such as stores that sell new and old vehicles, as well as those who perform maintenance and repairs on vehicles.

The single hotel in Waitara is called the Blue Gum Hotel. This location has been home to a hotel since 1884; however, two fires have caused the prior structures to be destroyed. The history of the existing building can be traced back to 1962.

In addition, Waitara is home to the Asquith Rugby League Club in addition to the Millennium Health Club.

The Police and Community Youth Clubs work together to manage the Performing Arts Centre on Edgeworth David Avenue (the latter is named after the scientist Edgeworth David).

When Myles McRae was younger, he owned property in Southern Sydney, not far from Hurstville. Waitara was chosen as the name of the new subdivision after he sold the land to a company that specialises in real estate development. After that, McCrae purchased land in the vicinity of Hornsby, and in 1895, when the railway station opened, he suggested calling the area Waitara, which was ultimately adopted.

On October 1st, 1913, the Waitara Post Office first opened its doors, and it remained open until 1986. The Waitara East Post Office first opened its doors on June 1, 1966, and it remained open until 1994 before finally closing its doors.
