St Leonards is a locality on the lower North Shore of Sydney in the Australian state of New South Wales. St Leonards is situated 5 kilometres north-west of Sydney’s central business district and straddles the municipal lines of Municipality of Lane Cove, North Sydney Council, and City of Willoughby.
St Leonards was named after the English aristocrat Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney of St Leonards. Historically, St Leonards comprised the entire area between the present-day districts of North Sydney and Gore Hill. St Leonards was the site of what is now North Sydney in 1883.
The North Shore line’s first and oldest station, which opened in 1890 and originally served only Hornsby, was located in St Leonards.
On the Pacific Highway, the Gore Hill cemetery was established in 1868 and functioned as the main burial ground until 1975. It continues to be managed as a heritage property by the Department of Local Government and Lands, Willoughby Municipal Council, and the Heritage Council of New South Wales.
St Leonards features a commercial district that complements Chatswood, Lane Cove, and North Sydney as one of Sydney’s North Shore’s business hubs. St Leonards is home to one of Sydney’s suburban skyscraper clusters, as well as the headquarters of a number of major corporations, including Toyota Financial Services, IBM, Lenovo, Oporto Chicken & Burgers, Manchester United, 3, Savvytel, CIMIC Group, Forum Group, Macquarie Radio Network, and Channel 31 TV studio. The Information Technology Directorate of the NSW Department of Education and Training is located on Herbert Street. Gore Hill Technology Park is home to the current Fox Sports television studios.
Sydney Trains’ North Shore & Western Line services the St. Leonards station. Within the suburb, the Pacific Highway is the principal highway.
St Leonards has become somewhat of a home for rugby union, as the previous headquarters of the Australian Rugby Union (2007-2018) relocated there from North Sydney. The Northern Suburbs Rugby Club’s clubhouse, which includes the Cabana Bar and Lounge, is located in St. Leonards.
Gore Hill Oval is the North Shore Bombers’ home field for Australian rules football.
