Shalvey is a neighbourhood of Blacktown. Shalvey, in the local government area of the City of Blacktown and part of Greater Western Sydney, is located 48 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district.
The Shalvey Shops is a modest Shalvey shopping centre. There is a supermarket, a pharmacy, a doctor, a butcher, and takeaway restaurants, in addition to a BP service station with a fully working mechanical workshop.
Shalvey derives its name from the area’s main road, which was previously a subdivision route of the crown. Patrick Shalvey (1866–1962), a wealthy landowner who ran an abattoir there to serve his city’s butcher shops, is commemorated by the street’s naming.
The housing market in New South Wales is dominated by large terrace-style apartment complexes erected during the 1960s and 1970s and maintained by the Department of Housing. These are progressively being transferred to private ownership, and as this process continues, the government-built structures are being replaced with privately constructed, contemporary residences similar to those being developed in other areas of Sydney.
