Rookwood Taxi Maxi, In the Cumberland Council local government area, Rookwood is a suburb in western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated 17 kilometres west of the city’s CBD.
Rookwood Cemetery is the largest burial ground in the Southern Hemisphere.
A novel by William Harrison Ainsworth that was published in 1834 bears the same name as Rookwood (1805–1882). In 1859, a station called Haslam’s Creek on the line connecting Sydney and Parramatta was established in this area. Throughout the creek’s grants in 1804, Samuel Haslam was in charge. In July 1858, the first railroad disaster in New South Wales took place near Haslam’s Creek and resulted in the deaths of two people.
The graveyard’s original name was Haslam’s Creek Cemetery when it first opened in 1867. In 1876, the suburb’s name was changed to Rookwood because the locals didn’t like how they interacted with the cemetery. Rookwood became the new name of the station in 1878, and by the 1880s, local businesses had established themselves. 1891 saw the creation of the Municipality of Rookwood. (in 1913 given the name Lidcombe).
Rookwood Cemetery is the name that the cemetery has had for a while. By 1898, the connection between their suburb and the cemetery had disturbed the locals once more. Lidcombe was the new name for the suburb’s residential area and the railroad station in 1914. In the past, the westernmost Flemington rail yard intersection and the Arthur Street bridge were where you might find the Rookwood railway station, which served the Rookwood Cemetery.
On January 1, 1949, Auburn amalgamated with the Lidcombe Municipality.

Rookwood Railway Station, which was on Sydney’s Main Suburban Railway line until it was closed in 1967, was a station. In the past, the Mortuary train station on Regent Street next to Central railway station served as the starting point for the Rookwood Cemetery Line; however, this service has since been terminated.
Launched on October 22, 1864, the Cemetery railway line. Only Cemetery Station No. 1 was served by the railway when it first opened. The third Cemetery Station No. 3 was served by a railway extension that was inaugurated on May 26, 1897. In order for the line to pass straight through Cemetery Station No. 1, the extension made it necessary to remove the waiting room that was located on the back wall of the building. On June 19, 1908, the Cemetery Station No. 4 extension, the final one, was opened. In 1948, there were no more trains.
