Queenscliff Taxi Maxi, Queenscliff, located in the Australian state of New South Wales, is a northern Sydney suburb. Queenscliff is a suburb of Sydney that lies 16 kilometres to the northeast of the CBD and falls under the jurisdiction of the Northern Beaches Council.
Queen Victoria inspired the town’s name, “Queenscliff.” People came to the area to take vacations in the holiday shacks that dotted the headland from the early 1900s up until World War I.
In the Australian surfing community, Queenscliff is famous for its “heavy” (bombora) swells. Big wave surfing originated in Australia after hearing about Dave Jackman’s heroic ride on a massive wave in 1961.
The northernmost part of Manly’s beachfront, which also includes North Steyne Beach and Manly Beach, is known as Queenscliff Beach.
It seems that the Aboriginal name for the area that now includes Queenscliff and Manly Vale was Curl Curl.
Manly Lagoon used to be known as Curl Curl Lagoon before its current name was chosen. Manly Creek was formerly known as Curl Curl Creek, while Curl Curl Headland was previously known as Queenscliff Headland.
Queenscliff had 3,376 people call it home as of the 2016 Census. An estimated 57.0% of Australians were born within the country. New Zealand (4%) and England (9.5%) were the two most common secondary countries of origin. The majority of people (79.7%) reported speaking only English at home. In terms of religious affiliation, the top three responses were “No Religion” (43.8%), “Catholic” (22.6%), and “Anglican” (13%).
