Northwood is a suburb on Sydney’s Lower North Shore in the Australian state of New South Wales, eight kilometres north-west of Sydney’s central business district and within the Municipality of Lane Cove. Northwood is located on the northern side of the Lane Cove River, between Woodford Bay and Gore Creek.
Mrs. Jane Davy built Northwood House in 1878, which was designed by Edmund Blacket (1817-1883). The name was chosen since it correctly depicts the location, a northern woodland area. Mrs. Davy also built a ferry on her own dime so that her family could get to the city by boat. Exploring the Early History of Northwood by John and Pam Ball was published in 2016 by Riverview.
St. Leonards is the nearest train station, and there are frequent bus services in the area. The Northwood ferry pier provides access to the Captain Cook Cruises Lane Cove River ferry service, which is popular among workers who take the boat to Circular Quay to commute to the CBD.
Landscape artist Lloyd Rees lived in Northwood for many years before his death in 1988. Many of his later pieces represent the region.
William Edwin Pidgeon, often known as Bill Pidgeon and WEP, was an Australian painter who lived in Northwood from 1909 to 1981. He was awarded the Archibald Prize three times: in 1958, 1961, and 1968.
