History

In 1833, a prominent local landowner, John Town built the “Woolpack Inn” on a bluff overlooking the river crossing. The inn was rebranded as “Travellers’ Rest” in 1874. North Richmond Hotel, a newer hotel that opened next to the first inn in 1933, changed its name in 1940.
In the 1860s, a wooden bridge was constructed across the Hawkesbury River to replace the ferry and punt that had previously been used to traverse the river. In 1905, it was replaced with the world’s largest reinforced concrete bridge, located higher up. The following two decades saw little change at all. It wasn’t until 1926 that a rail spur between Richmond and Kurrajong finally opened. Besides the concrete bridge, the railroad bridge was built. The line curved to the right at the western end of the bridge and then back again to cross Bells Line of Road at an angle not far from where it met Grose Vale Road. North Richmond was served by a railroad station. After the railway was abandoned in 1952, the bridge was incorporated into the roadway.

As of the 2016 census, the population of North Richmond was 4,977.
