Newington Taxi Maxi, Newington is a suburb of Sydney located in New South Wales, Australia. It is located 16 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district in the local government area of the City of Parramatta.
Newington is located one kilometre north-northwest of Sydney Olympic Park and two kilometres west of Wentworth Point on the Parramatta River. It is well-known as the site of the Athletes Village during the Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games of 2000. After the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Athlete’s Village was converted into apartments. Since then, further apartments and single-family homes have been built. On a reserve opposite Newington Marketplace is a memorial containing the names of all Australian Olympians and Paralympians who competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics and Paralympics in Sydney.
The Newington Marketplace is an open-air shopping centre with a Woolworths, specialty shops, cafes, and restaurants. In addition, Newington features a number of office and warehouse space-containing commercial buildings.
The enormous tidal marshes of Homebush Bay were dubbed “The Flats” within ten days of the First Fleet’s arrival in Australia. Between 1788 and 1831, the Wanng-al clans’ land was separated into parts ranging from 100 to 10,000 acres (40 km2) and distributed to the first European settlers. These land transfers were recorded on maps of County of Cumberland, with the names of the donors and the donated land prominently displayed.
In 1807, John Blaxland acquired 520 hectares of land and kept the original grants of Waterhouse, Shortland, Archer, and Haslam. He named the estate Newington after his family’s estate in Kent, England. Blaxland was generating 8 tonnes of salt per week for the Sydney market from a series of salt pans he constructed along the Parramatta River in 1827. Blaxland also constructed a tweed mill, a lime kiln, and a flourmill. St Augustine’s Chapel was constructed in 1838, whereas Newington House was completed in 1832.
In 1843, Blaxland mortgaged the property to the Australian Trust Company. The Trust Company recouped the money by selling the property to John Dobie after his death in 1851. The Blaxland family repurchased the estate from Dobie in 1854, but pledged it as collateral for a significant loan. The property was passed to the Official Assignee of the Insolvent Estate of Edward James Blaxland in 1860, who then leased the property to the Methodist Church, who established Newington College on the site. John Wetherill acquired the land that encompassed the region between present-day Holker Street and Carnarvon Street in 1877.
In the year 1841, Blaxland performed coal mining explorations. A series of six-meter tunnels he dug caught the attention of the Australian Mining Company. After establishing an agreement, the parties engaged in numerous unsuccessful excursions. In 1878, the City of Sydney Coal Company was granted permission to mine coal at the site. The business drilled to a depth of 457 metres without success. Australian Timber Company was established in 1855 for the purpose of exploiting the timber stands in Newington and the surrounding area. During the 1870s and 1880s, Sydney’s suburbs grew rapidly, and it was believed that constructing a residential town between Sydney and Parramatta would be beneficial. This turned out not to be true.
