Neutral Bay, a neighbourhood on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, is situated on the waterfront. Approximately 1.5 kilometres north of Sydney’s central business district, Neutral Bay is under the jurisdiction of North Sydney Council.
Neutral Bay was named after a bay in Sydney Harbour. Kurraba Point, formerly a hamlet in Neutral Bay, was officially designated as a separate suburb with its own postcode of 2089 in 2010. Nearby areas include North Sydney, Cammeray, Milsons Point, Cremorne, and Cremorne Point.
Military Route connects Neutral Bay, Cremorne, and Mosman, and it passes through the heart of Neutral Bay, known as Neutral Bay Junction. There are many excellent places to eat and shop here. In addition to a grocery and convenience stores, Big Bear Retail Centre also features a variety of specialty shops. Behind the Big Bear is where you’ll find the North Sydney Bus Depot of Sydney Buses.
Located at the crossroads of Military Road and Ben Boyd Road, the Oaks Hotel is a well-known and well-liked hotel. A Sydney institution since 1885, it regularly hosts a wide variety of events. The early colonial period in Australia is credited with the origin of the moniker “Neutral Bay,” which refers to the practise of designating separate harbours in Sydney Harbour for different categories of entering vessels. Neutral Bay got its name because it was the primary port of call for all international shipping.
In 1789, after the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney, Governor Arthur Phillip designated this bay as a neutral port where foreign ships might anchor and resupply. The local Aboriginal name for the area was “Wirra-birra.” Neutral Bay’s distance from Sydney Cove was great enough to prevent convicts from escaping on these vessels and to hinder possible enemy ships from approaching the main settlement.
At the turn of the twentieth century, Neutral Bay and Cremorne grew as “alternative society suburbs,” attracting people who favoured the Arts and Crafts architectural movement of the time. An attempt to avoid mass production and give houses a more “personal touch,” this design ethos became popular in the 1980s. It didn’t take long at all for regional examples to emerge as models of excellence. Brent Knowle, a residence designed by Bertha James Waterhouse, was built in 1914 on Shellcove Road (now a portion of Kurraba Point). It’s been designated as a state historic landmark, and it’ll be felt in local house designs for the next fifteen years or more.
