Mount Victoria Taxi Maxi, Within the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia is where you’ll find the quaint community of Mount Victoria (postcode: 2786). It is the most westerly settlement in the City of Blue Mountains, located roughly 1,051 metres above sea level and approximately 120 kilometres by automobile from the central business centre of Sydney. The town has a total population of 823 residents as at the time of the aforementioned census in 2011.
Mount Victoria is located on an escarpment plateau extension of Mount York, which in 1813 served as the site of a camp along the first Blaxland, Wentworth, and Lawsoncrossing routes in the Blue Mountains. Mount Victoria itself is located on an escarpment plateau extension of Mount York. On an early map from 1834, the area was initially labelled as “One Tree Hill” by Sir Thomas Mitchell, who was serving as Surveyor General at the time. When the town was established in 1866, the name “One Tree Hill” was chosen for it for this very reason.
After the construction of the road that went over the Blue Mountains, in 1849, a toll bar was established approximately 1 kilometre (0.62 miles) east of the current settlement. At the time, the area was also referred to as Broughton’s Waterhole Toll Bar. The amount of the toll that was applied to coaches was determined by how well-sprung they were; coaches that lacked springs were spared from the fee because it was believed that they would contribute to the deterioration of the road.
The town’s name was changed to Mount Victoria in 1869, shortly after the opening of the railway station at the terminus of the Main Western railway line. This event prompted the renaming of the town. In 1876, when the town’s first post office was built, the name of the community was formally altered at that time.
By the end of the 19th century, the town had developed into a thriving community, and a number of private institutions, such as The School, Mount Victoria, had been built in the region, which had developed into a type of hill station retreat for wealthy families from Sydney.
