Manly Vale is a northern Sydney suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales, 17 kilometers north-east of Sydney’s central business district and within the Northern Beaches Council local government area.
Manly Vale is predominantly a residential community, with commercial land use on Condamine Street and a few tiny industrial sectors. A number of Retirement Villages and Senior Care facilities are also present.
Passmore Reserve, Millers Reserve, and David Thomas Reserve are just a few of the numerous recreational opportunities in the area. Manly Dam is located on the western side of Manly Vale. There are also a handful of local reserves, such as the King Street Reserve. The Manly Vale FC soccer club is located at David Thomas Reserve.
Landcare operations in Manly Vale became crucial with the commencement of the “Return of the Mermaids” project. The project involves recruiting volunteers on a regular basis to collect rubbish, eliminate weeds, and plant native species in the Mermaid Pool on Manly Creek.
The Pool was originally a lovely sand beach with a waterfall. It became contaminated due to illegal dumping and urbanisation. A noxious and invasive vegetation dominated the countryside.
This project was begun under the aegis of the Save Manly Dam Catchment Committee. The SMDCC was created to fight the construction of a controversial structure in the headwaters of Manly Dam by Wimpey and Ardel. The Mermaid Pool Project was initiated to compensate for the destruction of the natural environment caused by the construction of these homes.
The “Return of the Mermaids” project aims to restore the Mermaid Pool as closely as possible to its former state. The initiative received the People’s Choice Award at the 2011 New South Wales Landcare Awards. In addition, it received the SMCMA Community Group Environment Award in 2011.
