Although Meehan was taken to Australia as a convict for his role in the Irish Rebellion of 1798, he had trained as a surveyor in Ireland and was named Charles Grimes’ assistant in 1803. In 1806 he was granted a full pardon, and in 1810 he was named Surveyor-General. In honour of his contributions, he was given a variety of parcels of property, including 2,020 acres (8.2 km2) in what is now Macquarie Fields and neighbouring neighbourhoods. On the lush land, he cultivated grain crops, fruit trees, and livestock.

Long into the 1980s, residents of the privately owned areas of Macquarie Fields were passionately opposed to the addition of new developments to their neighbourhood. Since then, the local administration has endeavoured to consolidate the area into a single suburb. Private housing complexes arose further out, and population density led to the town center’s expansion.
