Leura, with the postcode 2780, is a suburb in the City of Blue Mountains local government area in New South Wales, Australia. It is 100 kilometres (62 miles) west of Sydney’s central business district. It is one of the small towns along the Main Western railway line and the Great Western Highway, which go through the Blue Mountains National Park and separate it into two parts. Leura is close to Katoomba, which is the main town in the upper mountains. The two towns come together along the western edge of Leura.
The Dharug people were the first ones to live there. Archaeological findings at Lyrebird Dell in South Leura show that native people have lived there for more than 12,000 years.
On an expedition in 1813, Gregory Blaxland, William Lawson, and William Charles Wentworth were the first Europeans to visit the area. After them came George Evans’s trip in November 1813 and William Cox’s group of road builders the next year.
When the western railway line was built through the Blue Mountains in 1867 and 1868, a gatehouse (No. 9) was built where the line met the Western Road near the current Sorensen Bridge. The gatekeepers were the first Europeans to live there for good. In the early 1880s, coal was found in the Jamison Valley, which is now where the Leura golf course is. This led to the building of a colliery, which was another early building.
The first time the name Leura was used was on a subdivision plan for land owned by Frederick Clissold that was made between January and March 1881. The land was south of the railroad line. Clissold called a beautiful waterfall on his plan Leura Falls. Many theories have been put forward about where the name Leura came from, but nothing has been proven. When the land was put up for sale as the Leura Estate later in 1881, however, the name was already well-known
