Katoomba Taxi Maxi. Katoomba (postcode: 2780) is the administrative centre of Blue Mountains City Council and the primary town of Blue Mountains City in New South Wales, Australia. Katoomba is located on the Great Western Highway 110 kilometres west of Sydney and 39 kilometres south-east of Lithgow. Along the Main Western route can be found the Katoomba train station.
Katoomba is the beginning point for nature and wilderness adventures in the adjacent Blue Mountains. At the time of the 2016 census, there were 7,966 people living in Katoomba. The Gundungurra and Darug tribes, in particular, have inhabited the Blue Mountains for countless millennia. They were familiar with the kedumba region, which translates literally as “shiny, falling rivers.” Numerous traditional Aboriginal peoples continue to remain in the Blue Mountains, where a range of cultural attractions introduce travellers to the region’s storied past and the customs and traditions of the native tribes.
Katoomba and neighbouring Medlow Bath were initially promoted as tourist destinations at the end of the 19th century, when a series of hotels were built and then expanded.

As Katoomba’s population fell in the 1960s, a number of the town’s guesthouses were converted to other purposes, such as convalescent homes. When Katoomba was connected to the Main Western railway line in 1874, the station was referred to as “The Crushers.” Currently, Blue Mountains Line serves the Katoomba train station.
The Great Western Highway is the principal access route.
