Kareela is a southern Sydney suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. Stockland’s first mixed-use estate, Kareela, was constructed in 1953. Originally, the estate was known as Sylvan Headland. The name of Sylvan Headland was changed to Kareela when the estate opened. Kareela is derived from an Aboriginal word that means either “place of trees and water” or “south wind” or “wind rider.” The Geographical Names Board authorised the name of the suburb in 1968. Between 1945 and 1970, the majority of streets in Kareela were named after outright winners and line-honours winners of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
Kareela is a suburb located in the southwestern part of the city of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales in Australia. In 1953, construction began on Stockland’s first mixed-use estate, which was named Kareela. Sylvan Headland was the original name of the property when it was first purchased. When Kareela Estate was opened for business, the former name of Sylvan Headland was changed to Kareela. The name Kareela originates from an Aboriginal word that might mean “place of trees and water,” “south wind,” or “wind rider,” depending on the context. In 1968, the Geographical Names Board gave its approval to the name of the nearby suburb. The bulk of Kareela’s streets received their names between 1945 and 1970, with several of them being named after outright winners and line-honors winners of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.
