In 1869, a railroad station was built on the land that had previously been part of the Neale grant. It was given the name Macquarie Fields Station, after a farm that was located in the area. Macquarie Fields was established as a new community in 1881 after the Macquarie Fields estate was divided up and sold off to individual buyers. In 1883, a new name for the station was desired because of the considerable distance that separated it from the surrounding community, and the name Ingleburn was selected. According to one version of events, the place got its name from a local residence that had been owned in the past by Mary Ruse, who was the daughter of the pioneer James Ruse. Other documents give the impression that it was named after a town in Britain, despite the fact that the town in question has never been officially acknowledged. The name Ingleburn comes from the Scottish phrase “bend in the river,” which refers to the significant curve that can be found in the river that is located nearby.
In 1885, the town of Ingleburn was established as a result of the subdivision of land that had been owned by a developer by the name of FitzStubbs. In the year 1887, the first public school was opened its doors. On November 15th, 1886, the Ingleburn Post Office first opened its doors to customers. By the year 1896, the size of the town warranted the establishment of its own municipal council. Amenities such as street lighting and water mains were not readily available until after World War I. In 1948, the Council merged with the Council of the City of Campbelltown to form the Campbelltown City Council.
