Ingleburn is a neighbourhood in the metropolitan area of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is situated in the City of Campbelltown local government area, which is 40 kilometres south-west of the central business district of Sydney. It is located within the Macarthur region of the city. Ingleburn can be thought of as being roughly in the middle of Liverpool and Campbelltown, both of which are important financial and commercial centres.
The Tharawal people were the first people to settle in the area that is now known as Ingleburn. The arrival of the First Fleet in 1788 changed their lives forever. In the year 1809, former members of the New South Wales Corps named William Hall, Joshua Alliot, William Neale, and Timothy Loughlin were granted the first land concessions in the area. Because of this, the area is now commonly referred to as “Soldier Flat.”
In 1869, a railroad station was built on the land that had previously been part of the Neale grant. It was given the name Macquarie Fields Station, after a farm that was located in the area. Macquarie Fields was established as a new community in 1881 after the Macquarie Fields estate was divided up and sold off to individual buyers. In 1883, a new name for the station was desired because of the considerable distance that separated it from the surrounding community, and the name Ingleburn was selected. According to one version of events, the place got its name from a local residence that had been owned in the past by Mary Ruse, who was the daughter of the pioneer James Ruse. Other documents give the impression that it was named after a town in Britain, despite the fact that the town in question has never been officially acknowledged. The name Ingleburn comes from the Scottish phrase “bend in the river,” which refers to the significant curve that can be found in the river that is located nearby.
In 1885, the town of Ingleburn was established as a result of the subdivision of land that had been owned by a developer by the name of FitzStubbs. In the year 1887, the first public school was opened its doors. On November 15th, 1886, the Ingleburn Post Office first opened its doors to customers. By the year 1896, the size of the town warranted the establishment of its own municipal council. Amenities such as street lighting and water mains were not readily available until after World War I. In 1948, the Council merged with the Council of the City of Campbelltown to form the Campbelltown City Council.
In 1969, a sizeable portion of land located west of the railroad line was rezoned to become an industrial estate. Protests from residents of the area temporarily halted the plan’s implementation; however, within ten years, the west side of the city had become predominately industrial and has continued to be so up until the present day. In the 1970s, additional housing subdivisions and complexes were built on the outskirts of the city. Some of these were built by the Housing Commission.
The Ingleburn train station is a significant piece of local history and can be found in Ingleburn. This station is serviced by the Sydney Trains network’s Airport & South Line in both directions.
There are six different Interline bus routes that serve the Ingleburn neighbourhood:
