Holsworthy Taxi Maxi, Holsworthy is a suburb in south-western Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, located 31 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district and within the local government area of the City of Liverpool.
Holsworthy is most well-known for its extensive Australian Army reserve, Holsworthy Barracks, where regular training exercises are conducted. The reserve is connected to Bankstown, Liverpool, Lucas Heights, Engadine, and Heathcote through Heathcote Road. A perimeter of signs warns potential intruders that both laser-guided and conventional gunfire will be employed.
The residential neighbourhood is located north of the station. Anzac Village is in the northern portion of the neighbourhood and is adjacent to Wattle Grove. Recently, a new community called “Mornington” has been constructed in this region. A shopping centre has also been erected in this region.
The region was named after Holsworthy, Devon, England, where Governor Lachlan Macquarie married Elizabeth Campbell on November 3, 1807. Before World War II, the name was spelled Holdsworthy, but the ‘d’ was dropped.
Indigenous people were pushed from their ancestral territories in the Sydney region after the advent of the First Fleet. George Bass and Matthew Flinders investigated the Georges River in 1795, and land grants for farming were made in the region in 1798. Soon thereafter, corn, wheat, and vegetables were collected from the rich soil.
Nonetheless, tensions erupted with the Tharawal. In 1801, Governor King ordered soldiers to fire upon indigenous people in an effort to keep them away from colonial properties. By 1815, Governor Macquarie had declared open warfare on the aborigines of the Georges River region and prohibited them from carrying arms within one mile of British settlements. In the end, the British prevailed.
In 1835, the town of Eckersley was founded on present-day military grounds. By the 1880s, the region contained numerous vineyards. In 1913, the army purchased the land. During World War I, it was home to a huge internment camp for German and Austro-Hungarian civilians. In 1915, convicts from the horrific Torrens Island Concentration Camp were transferred to the camp. The current community of Holsworthy expanded to the north after World War II, while the barracks expanded to the south. Streets named after military leaders include Tarakan, Bardia, Wewak, Lae, Brunei, Finschhafen, Madang, Gona, Anzac, Light Horse, Infantry, Cavalry, Sabre, Gunners Row, and Trooper Row. Birdwood, Monash, Bridges, and Blamey are among the remembered Australian generals at Anzac Village.
The Holsworthy wilderness is referred to as “Sydney’s Kakadu” due to the presence of numerous indigenous sites. Over 500 major Tharawal sites, including campsites, tool-making sites, and rock art, are located in this region. The majority of the engravings depict hands, boomerangs, animals, birds, and fish.
