Gymea Bay is named after a small bay on the northern side of the Port Hacking estuary (also known as the Port Hacking River). The suburb consisted solely of the peninsula between Gymea Bay and the North West Arm of the Port Hacking River, bounded to the north by Coonong Creek and to the west of Gymea Bay Road, between Barraran Street and Coonong Road, is an unidentified brook.
