Greenwich is a suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is on Sydney’s Lower North Shore. Greenwich is in the Municipality of Lane Cove and is seven kilometres north-west of Sydney’s central business district.

On the northside of Sydney Harbour, the suburb is on a peninsula at the mouth of the Lane Cove River. The neighbourhood has views of the harbour, a few patches of woods, stores, restaurants, cafes, and a harbour swimming pool with a shark net.
Every four years, the Greenwich Village Games are held at Bob Campbell Oval (also called Gore Creek Oval) and Lane Cove Aquatic Centre. There are many different sports and competitions at them. The Greenwich Sports Club was started in 1936. It organises football for men, women, and children, as well as netball for girls. There are also two places to sail. One is at the mouth of Lane Cove River, while the other is off Greenwich Point.
A Scout Hall on the eastern side of the city is where the Greenwich/Wollstonecraft Scout group and other local groups meet often.
Circular Quay goes to Cockatoo Island from the Greenwich Point ferry port on the Parramatta River. Sydney Ferries provides ferry service to Cockatoo Island. During peak times, Captain Cook Cruises runs a second pier on the Lane Cove River. McMahons Point and Lane Cove are served by State Transit route 265, which goes to Greenwich Point. The closest train stations are Wollstonecraft and St. Leonards.
The name of the neighbourhood comes from Greenwich, a neighbourhood in London on the banks of the River Thames. The Parramatta River used to be called the “Thames of the Antipodes,” and several nearby suburbs, such as Putney, Woolwich, and Henley, were named after boroughs on the Thames.
The first people to live in the Greenwich area were the Cammeraygal clan of the Kuringgai people. They lived along the harbor’s foreshores, hunted in the surrounding area, and traded with other clans.
Lieutenant Henry Ball was the first known European to visit the area in 1788. He was on his way back from a trip to the Middle Harbour area. In 1794, the first land grants were given out, and in the 1830s, the area started to become industrialised.
In the 1820s, there were still native people there, but by the 1860s, sickness and moving had forced them to leave.
Samuel Lightfoot, a prisoner, and William Gore, a public servant, got the first land grants in 1794 and 1813, respectively. Gore built a road from his farm in Artarmon to Gore Cove. This road was the start of Greenwich Road.
In the 1830s, George Green and his father Amaziah bought land in Greenwich that was close to the harbour. Together with others, they started a shipbuilding business on the water’s edge. When Green split up his land in 1840, the name “Greenwich” first appeared.
