Georges Hall Taxi Maxi | Georges Hall is a suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is part of the Canterbury-Bankstown Council and is 24 km south-west of Sydney’s central business district. It is in the South-western Sydney region.
The Georges River is to the west of Georges Hall, and Bankstown Airport is to the south. The Bass Hill suburb is to the north, and the Condell Park suburb is to the east.
Garrison Point is close to where the Georges River and Prospect Creek come together. Lake Gillawarna is an artificial lake that is right next to Garrison Point. It is a major place where birds in the area breed.
The southern part of Mirambeena Regional Park is made up of Garrison Point and Lake Gillawarna. The park goes into the nearby town of Lansvale. Just south of Garrison Point, along Henry Lawson Drive, is Kentucky Reserve, another park with a view of the Georges River.
This area used to be part of Bankstown and Bankstown Airport (its nearest neighbour).
In 1795, George Bass, Matthew Flinders, and the servant boy William Martin went on a trip on the Tom Thumb to explore parts of the colony. They sailed into Botany Bay and explored the Georges River, going 32 kilometres farther than previous expeditions to where Garrison Point is now.
In 1798, Governor John Hunter gave Bass 0.40 km2 for his work exploring (in the area of present-day Hazel Street and Flinders Road, adjacent to Prospect Creek). Bass Hill, a nearby neighbourhood, is named for him. In the end, this grant was given back to the Crown. Bass’s friend Mathew Flinders got a grant to go south of Bass’s expedition (bounded by present day Marion St, Bellevue Ave, Flinders Rd and Prospect Creek). He bought more land until he owned 1.2 km2 of it, but he didn’t farm it.
Lieutenant-Colonel George Johnston built his first home, a farmhouse, in this area in 1798. He had been given 172 acres (0.70 km2) as a gift. It was called Georges Hall and was near where Henry Lawson Drive and Beatty Parade are now. It was on Prospect Creek. David, his third son, worked as a grazier on this property, which used to be a farm. The area was named after the Johnston farm.
