Faulconbridge Taxi Maxi. The height of Faulconbridge, a town in the Blue Mountains 77 kilometres west of Sydney, New South Wales, is 450 metres above sea level (coordinates: 33°41′S 150°32′E). As of the 2016 census, it was projected that 4,025 people called Faulconbridge home.
Prior to European exploration, indigenous Australians had inhabited the Faulconbridge region for thousands of years. They left behind several artefacts, but the Ticehurst Park rock carvings are particularly amazing. A number of sculptures may be seen at this place, including two emus, some grinding grooves, and a number of waterholes that were dug or enlarged to collect rainfall.
In May of 1813, Blaxland, Wentworth, and Lawson set up camp at Springwood and began exploring the region in search of a route across the mountains. In the 1870s, the coming of the railroad made the area accessible to settlers.
Sir Henry Parkes, renowned as the “Father of Federation,” purchased 2.4 km2 of land in the region in 1877. Faulconbridge House, where he supposedly resided, is said to have inspired the town’s first train station. The town was named after Parkes’s childhood home. His mother’s maiden name was Faulconbridge, and he called a nearby waterfall Clarinda Varney Falls in honour of his first wife (whose surname was carried on by their son, Varney Parkes). In Faulconbridge Cemetery are the graves of Parkes, his first wife Varney Parkes, and other family members. On the railing is a plaque that reads, “Sir Henry Parkes, Father of Australian Federation, five times Prime Minister of New South Wales, arrived in Australia on July 25, 1839. Among his numerous jobs were station hand, Customs Officer, and bone and ivory turner. In 1850, he acquired the Empire Newspaper. Sir Henry Parkes, who served as a member of the New South Wales Parliament from 1854 to 1894, is best remembered for his contributions to the expansion of education and transportation in his home state, as well as his role in the founding of the Federation.
