Epping is a Sydney suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales, located 18 kilometers northwest of Sydney’s CBD and within the City of Parramatta local government area. Epping is located in the Northern Suburbs and Greater Western areas of Sydney.
The suburb is in the city of Parramatta’s northeastern outskirts. North Epping is a distinct suburb to the north that is controlled by a different council, Hornsby Shire.
Aside from a large Coles supermarket on Rawson Street, Epping is home to a variety of local businesses, including Asian grocers, pharmacies, newsstands, and restaurants near the train station. Other commercial and small-scale industrial developments can be found nearby.
The Epping RSL Club is a popular hangout for many individuals, mainly students from nearby Macquarie University. The track is a nightclub at the Epping Hotel, a bar in Epping.
Since its completion on May 26, 2019, Epping Railway Station has functioned as a junction for the Sydney Trains network’s Northern Line, the NSW TrainLink network’s Central Coast & Newcastle Line, and the brand-new rapid transit Sydney Metro Northwest.
Epping’s bus services are also outstanding, thanks to State Transit and Hillsbus. The M2 Hills Motorway connects Sydney’s CBD to the city’s northern outskirts. Epping Road extends eastward from the train station to the Pacific Highway and is a major route in the community.
Despite having a range of public transportation options, according to the 2011 Census, just 31% of employed people took public transportation to work, while 51% drove themselves (either as drivers or as passengers).
The Wallumedegal Aboriginal people lived between the Lane Cove and the Parramatta rivers. [4] On Governor Arthur Phillip’s maps, the location was known as the Field of Mars, after the Roman god of war. Phillip began distributing marine land tracts in 1792. It encompassed the current town of Epping as well as the neighboring towns of Ryde and Marsfield.
The name “Field of Mars” of Epping railway station, which opened on September 17, 1886, was quickly changed to “Carlingford” on April 5, 1887. The “East Carlingford” Post Office was established on October 16, 1889.
In 1899, the suburb of Epping was named by a local landowner named William Midson (1849-1924), who named the town near the Essex area of Epping Forest after the town where his father was born. At this time, both the post office and the railroad station were renamed, Epping.
The Seven Network had television production facilities in Epping until 2009. The area is currently occupied by apartment buildings.
Before 2016, parts of Epping were managed by three councils: Hornsby Shire, the City of Ryde, and the City of Parramatta. In a 2015 review of local government borders, the entire city of Epping was proposed to be amalgamated into the City of Parramatta, and this took effect on May 12, 2016.
