Eastwood is a suburb in Sydney, Australia. Eastwood is located 17 kilometres northwest of Sydney’s CBD in the local government areas of the City of Ryde and the City of Parramatta. Eastwood is located in the Northern Suburbs.

Europeans originally arrived in the region early after the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, thanks to land gifts to the Royal Marines and NSW Corps. It was named “Eastwood” by William Rutledge, an early Irish free settler who lived between the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers and is thought to have been a member of the Wallumedegal Aboriginal clan. It is now a large suburban neighbourhood in Sydney’s north, with over 14,000 residents and a significant shopping sector. Chinese immigrants have altered Eastwood’s commercial centre, which is home to a substantial Asian population, since the turn of the century.

Since Maria Ann Smith inadvertently planted the first trees in the neighbourhood, the Granny Smith apple has become famous in Eastwood. Every October, the Upper Eastwood Oval and the neighbouring cordoned-off streets host the Granny Smith Festival, an annual celebration of the icon that includes fairground rides, market stalls, street theatres, parades, an apple-baking contest, and a fireworks display. As evidenced by the Chinese dragon dancers in the Grand Parade and Chinese vendors, the event has recently been influenced by a sizable Asian immigrant community. During the same time period, Eastwood’s annual Chinese New Year celebrations, which include Korean New Year rituals, have grown in popularity and been dubbed the Lunar New Year Festivities.
