Dean Park, New South Wales, Australia, is a suburb of the city of Sydney. Located in the municipality of Blacktown, some 43 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district, Dean Park is a local government area. It’s a section of Western Sydney.
Dean Park got its name because of the Dean family. William “Lumpy” Dean was awarded two separate land concessions in 1817, for a total of 200 acres (1776–1854). A third gift of 50 acres was made to him later, and it was located just next to Eastern Creek. His family ran the Bush Inn on the Western Highway. Dean Park is home to William Dean Public School, so named for the convict who was originally granted use of the area.
A first version of the suburb was planned and constructed in the early 1980s. Names like Yarramundi Drive have their origins in native American lore. It has been speculated that other streets will begin using the Hoyle brothers’ (the original site developers) names (Nathan, Kenneth, and Wayne).
Mamdouh Habib, a former prisoner at Guantanamo Bay, and Frank Flores, who died during a bus hijacking in the Philippines in 2004 while trying to protect other passengers, are two well-known alums of Dean Park. After Frank Flores passed away, a park was named in his honour. Every year, the Dean Park Neighborhood Center awards a memorial prize to a young person living in Dean Park who has shown exceptional talent and dedication throughout the year. Frank, a member of the Dean Park Neighborhood Council, took part in the event with great zeal.
