Chester Hill is a suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is in the Canterbury-Bankstown Council local government area and is 25 kilometres west of Sydney’s central business district.It is a component of Greater Western Sydney. The postcode 2162 is used by both Chester Hill and the nearby neighbourhood of Sefton.
After the Regents Park railway line was built through the area in 1924, what was once a market garden and orchard area north-west of Bankstown changed into a residential and light industrial area. The land where the station was built was called Boroya, which is an aboriginal word whose meaning is unknown. When the station opened on October 8, 1924, it was called Chester Hill.
Miss H. A. McMillan, a local resident, first suggested that the new train station be called Hillcrest, after an estate near Regent’s Park. However, the name was turned down because of several objections. Miss McMillan then suggested Hillchester, which was named after a charming English town, but the community did not like it (It was later discovered that McMillian invented the myth of an English town in order to get support for the name Hillchester, as there is no such place in England with that name). McMillian came up with yet another name, Chester Hill, which was received a bit better than her other ideas.
The area that became Chester Hill was once the southern part of John Thomas Campbell’s 1,000-acre (4.0 km2) Campbell Hill estate between Parramatta, Liverpool, and Woodville Roads in 1815. Most of this area was not developed until the 1920s, when the first subdivision was built and the first stores were built. The first public school opened in January of 1945, and the post office in July of 1934.
Since the 1960s, most of the area between Priam and Hector Streets has been used by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF).
(Source needed) This place was where the nearby 2 Stores Depot (Regents Park) and Ground Equipment Maintenance Squadron lived and ate (Villawood). These properties were sold and then bought by Southern Cross Bible College and Salamah (Muslim) College, respectively.
Chester Square in Chester Hill is the main shopping centre for Chester Hill, Sefton, Birrong, and Bass Hill, and it is right behind Waldron Road. The Chester Hill branch of the Bankstown City Library, the Chester Hill Fire Station, and a community centre are some of the suburb’s amenities.
