Chatswood is a large commercial and residential district on Sydney’s Lower North Shore in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is around 10 kilometres north of Sydney’s central business district. It is the administrative centre of the local government district in which the City of Willoughby is located.
Before Europeans arrived, the Cammeraygal people had been living in this area for at least 35,000 to 50,000 years.
Chatswood was named after Charlotte Harnett, the wife of Richard Harnett, the first Mayor of Willoughby and a pioneer of the town, as well as the region’s original “wooded” character. The area was originally called as Chattie’s Wood, but it was later abbreviated to simply Chatswood. Her nickname “Chattie” inspired the name. [when?] The first residential settlement in Chatswood was formed in 1876, and the area underwent fast growth with the construction of the North Shore railway line in 1890 and the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1932.
Sydney trains.
The Chatswood railway station is served by the T1 North Shore & Western Line and the T9 Northern Line, all of which are part of the Sydney Trains network. Southbound rail services halt at Sydney Central Business District before continuing to the western suburbs. There are train services that travel northbound to Hornsby, as well as trains that travel to Wyong and Gosford during peak hours. Prior to its transition into a component of the metro network in 2009, Chatswood Station served as a junction between the North Shore Line and the Epping to Chatswood railway line. This transition occurred in 2009.
The Sydney Metro
The Tallawong railway station in North West Sydney serves as the starting point for the Sydney Metro’s first stage, which runs all the way to Chatswood Station. The line’s extension to Sydney’s Central Business District is currently under development (2019).
Sydney’s buses
Passengers can board an interstate bus travelling between Sydney and Brisbane through the North Coast route in Chatswood.
Roads The Pacific Highway, Mowbray Road, Boundary Street, Willoughby Road, Eastern Valley Way, and Victoria Avenue are all major thoroughfares that run through Chatswood. The latter constructs a pedestrian mall along the pathway that passes through the main shopping district.
