Bullaburra Taxi Maxi. Bullaburra is a small town in New South Wales, Australia’s Blue Mountains. It is one of the numerous villages along the Main Western railway line and Great Western Highway, which are located west of Sydney in the Blue Mountains. In 2008, a gas station that had stood in Bullaburra was demolished. Aboriginals use bullaburra to denote a sunny day.
In 1931, a walking path was constructed around the region. The Railway Department agreed to provide the Blue Mountains Shire Council with electricity from the Lithgow power station; thus, a transmission line and maintenance track were installed from Blackheath to Lawson. The government offered this walkway to the public as a walking pathway on November 21, 1931. Bruce’s Walk was named after A.Bruce, the surveyor who designed it. On its way to Lawson, it passed through the northern portion of Bullaburra.
The walk, which was described in a brochure, brought participants past glens and summits. However, the railroad fell into disuse and obscurity after World War II. The trail was partially inaccessible because to the Greaves Creek dam, which was constructed in 1942 to provide drinking water to the area. Dick Rushton, a local walker, eventually located a copy of the brochure from 1931 and went out to clear and designate the trail. In 1980, he led a group of hikers along the trail between Bullaburra and Wentworth Falls. In 1983, he published a guidebook describing that segment of the trail.
After learning of Bruce’s Walk in 1986, a group of volunteers led by walkers Jim Smith and Wilf Hilder cleared the track between Bullaburra and Wentworth Falls. Signs, protective caverns, furniture, and even a picnic table were among the artefacts discovered. Alderman David Lawton inaugurated this segment of the railroad on May 24, 1986. A total of 118 people, including Dick Rushton at the age of 80, attended the inaugural celebration. (Both the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the mayor of the Blue Mountains City Council opposed this opening vehemently.) In 1986, volunteers also cleared and opened portions of the route between Wentworth Falls and Medlow Bath. It is not featured on any of the existing topographical maps and is still in bad shape.
De Quency Road and Cottle Road allow access to the walking paths in Bullaburra’s southernmost Red Gum Park. The park’s main feature, Minnetonka Falls, is conveniently placed near the Boronia Road neighbourhood. There are pathways that pass by the waterfall and continue downstream along the creek.
