Birrong is a suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is part of the South-western Sydney region and is about 22 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district.
Birrong and Regents Park and Potts Hill, two nearby neighbourhoods, all have the same zip code: 2143.
Birrong has a lot of community facilities, like six soccer/rugby league fields, tennis courts, a bowling club, a large natural park reserve, and a swimming pool. Birrong has two high schools, Birrong Boys High School and Birrong Girls High School, in addition to an elementary school. On Auburn Road, there are a few small businesses, such as a barbershop, bakery, newsstand, IGA (with a bottle shop and a butcher), hair salon, florist, and nail salon.
The Aboriginal word Birrong, which means “star,” was chosen as the name of the neighbourhood around 1927.
One of the first people to move to Birrong was a man named Joseph Hyde Potts. In 1835, the government gave him land there, and Potts Hill is named after him. When the railroad opened in 1928, things got better in the Birrong area. During the Great Depression, Birrong Park was drained because it was likely to flood (1929-1934). The post office first opened in 1955.
Birrong Females High School is a public high school for girls. It was started in 1957 as a comprehensive high school for girls. The school has about 820 students (estimated for 2006) who come from many different cultures. 84% of students don’t speak English at home. This makes up 46 different linguistic groups.
Birrong is served by a train station on the Bankstown Line of Sydney Trains. Birrong is also served by a bus network run by Transdev NSW.
