John Carne Bidwill (1815–1853) was given the position of head botanist at the Botanic Gardens in 1847, and the plant that bears his name was named for him. Before humanity began to settle and conquer Australia, members of the Darug tribe made their home at Bidwill and the surrounding area.

Construction of public housing was the most prominent industry in Bidwill throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Recent years have earned Bidwill a reputation for having problems, both with the economy and with society. These factors have contributed to a rise in criminal activity as well as other issues, including rioting.

Thomas Arndell, who arrived in New South Wales with the First Fleet and was appointed Assistant Surgeon to the settlement in that region, is credited with giving the area its name.

A retail and commercial complex can be found in Arndell Park. This complex is home to a number of different discount retailers and dining establishments, such as an Aldi supermarket, a Subway restaurant, a Gloria Jean’s coffee shop, an attorney’s office, a medical centre, a bottle shop known as Our Cellar, and a number of other establishments.
