Bankstown is a suburb in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is southwest of the city of Sydney. It is 16 kilometres south-west of Sydney’s central business district and is in the area where Canterbury-Bankstown Council is in charge of running things. Before 2016, it was the centre of the City of Bankstown’s government.
Bankstown’s main business area is centred around the Bankstown railway station. Bankstown Plaza is the commercial area next to the train station. Because the neighbourhood is made up of people from many different cultures, it has a lot of restaurants, cafés, and cafes.
The Bankstown Central Shopping Area is a big shopping centre northeast of the train station. It used to be called Centro Bankstown and Bankstown Square. It first opened in 1966, and since then, it has grown even more.
The Bankstown Central Library has been in its current spot in The Mall since 1954. Bankstown was the first city or town to follow the Library Act of 1939. They did this by opening a Children’s Library on Restwell Street in 1946, which was eight years before the law was passed. The Bankstown Central Library was torn down in 1981 so that the new building, which opened in 1983, could be built.
Bankstown is where a lot of important industries, like aviation, engineering, and airport maintenance, are based. Small businesses, the government, and the retail sector are also places where people work. The area has an unusually high rate of unemployment, which is being dealt with by a special plan for managing income.
The Bankstown line of Sydney Trains goes through the Bankstown station. The rail line was built to Belmore in 1895, and it was extended to Bankstown in 1909. The line was made electric in 1926, and in 1928, it was extended west from Bankstown to connect with the Main Suburban railway at Lidcombe and the Main South line to Liverpool. Bankstown is a major hub for many different bus routes.
Before Europeans came to the area, Cumberland Plains Woodland was the most common type of forest. A turpentine ironbark forest used to cover most of the area that is now Bankstown. The Bediagal were the people who lived there. Both the Dharawal and the Darung rivers were near their land.
In 1795, Matthew Flinders and George Bass went 20 miles further up the Georges River than had been mapped before and told Governor Hunter good things about the area along its banks.
[2] Hunter was one of the first people to settle there. He named the town Bank’s Town, which is now spelled as one word, Bankstown.

Hunter named the place Bankstown after Sir Joseph Banks, who came to Australia in 1770 with Captain James Cook. As part of Mirambeena Regional Park, the area where the first Europeans settled along the river is mostly safe.
